The Book of Revelation: Chapter 7

Scripture References:
In our journey through the book of Revelation, we arrive at Chapter 7, which serves as a divine intermission, a moment of hope and clarity in the midst of unfolding judgment. After the sixth seal judgment described at the end of Chapter 6, we're left with a question: "Who is able to stand?" Chapter 7 provides God's answer to this critical question.

A Divine Timeout

Chapter 7 marks an interlude or respite in the seal judgments. While there is still a final seventh seal that remains unbroken until Chapter 8, it's as if God calls a "timeout" just as even greater devastation is about to occur. This pause reveals God's heart of mercy even in the midst of necessary judgment.

The chapter opens with four angels stationed at the four corners of the earth (representing north, south, east, and west) holding back the winds that would serve as instruments of destruction. But before these judgments continue, another angel cries out, "Wait! There's something that has to be done first!" This something is the sealing of God's special servants.

The 144,000 Sealed Jewish Evangelists

When studying Revelation, the 144,000 are usually the most talked about but least understood people in the book. Let's shed some light on these sealed saints by examining what Scripture clearly teaches about their identity.

First and foremost, Scripture is unambiguous; these 144,000 are actual Jews from the twelve tribes of Israel. Various religious groups have claimed to be the 144,000, including Jehovah's Witnesses, Seventh-Day Adventists, and other movements. Some believe this group represents the New Testament church as "spiritual Israel."

However, we must not embrace the unbiblical doctrine known as "Replacement Theology": the idea that the church has replaced Israel in God's plan. God has not cast away His chosen people, the Israelites. Scripture teaches us that this race of people will not pass away; the Jewish people will be here until Jesus comes, and the nation of Israel will not be obliterated. God's promises will stand, and you can bank on it!

When someone suggests that the church is part of the 144,000, we should simply ask them, "Which tribe?" Our passage is crystal clear in verses 4-8 that these saints are from the specific tribes of Israel. Notably, the tribes of Dan and Ephraim are excluded from this list, likely due to their historical involvement in idolatry that led entire regions of Israel into false worship.

God's Special Witnesses

These 144,000 Jewish evangelists will be God's special witnesses during the tribulation period. Isaiah prophesied about this in Isaiah 49:6, when he declared that the Jews would become "a light for the nations" so that people "to the ends of the earth" might be saved. However, Isaiah's prophecy has remained largely unfulfilled during the church age because most Jews have rejected Jesus' claim to be the Messiah and have thus failed to become the light of the world God intended them to be.

In verse 3, John tells us that these 144,000 Jewish evangelists will have God's seal on their foreheads. While we don't know the specific details about this seal, the text suggests it will be visible and will provide divine protection during the tribulation period.

It's significant to note that during this same time, other people will be forced to receive the "mark of the beast" on their right hand or foreheads (Revelation 13:14-18). Perhaps believers will have the mark of God on their foreheads while unbelievers will have the mark of the Antichrist on theirs. Both marks appear to be final; once someone receives the Antichrist as their master, they will have made their eternal decision.

Spirit-Empowered Ministry

The Holy Spirit will undoubtedly empower the ministry of these 144,000 saints just as He did on the day of Pentecost in Acts 2. Importantly, the Holy Spirit will not be taken out of the world when the Church is raptured! Joel prophesied about this outpouring in Joel 2:28-32, declaring that God would pour out His Spirit on all flesh, causing sons and daughters to prophesy, old men to dream dreams, and young men to see visions.

As the Holy Spirit pours out His power upon these 144,000, it will be like having 144,000 Apostle Pauls proclaiming the Gospel of Christ throughout the world! There is going to be a great harvest of souls during the tribulation that the world has never seen. Some theologians believe that more people will accept Christ during the early months of the Tribulation than have been converted in the nearly 2,000 years of the church age!

The Great Multitude of Tribulation Saints

Revelation 7:9 introduces us to "a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues." This represents the fruit of the 144,000's evangelistic ministry: countless souls won to Christ during the tribulation period.

The main purpose of the Tribulation is to compress into seven years of dramatic judgment conditions that will bring every person to a decision about Jesus Christ or the Antichrist. While the majority will accept the mark of the beast as followers of the Antichrist, in the early part of the Tribulation, a multitude of others will choose Jesus, and they will suffer greatly for their faith.

These tribulation saints described in verse 9 have given their lives for Jesus Christ. Verses 16-17 tell us that some died from the effects of the tribulation judgments, while many others were martyred for their faith. The promise that God will wipe away every tear from their eyes in verse 17 is the same promise He makes to the Church in Revelation 21 after the Great White Throne Judgment.

Heaven's Perfect Comfort

The beautiful promise of God "wiping away every tear" likely represents His gracious removal of our capacity to remember pain, heartache, and even those who are eternally lost. For heaven wouldn't be heaven if we continued to remember all the bad and all the heartache of this fallen world. This demonstrates the incredible grace of our loving God.

These tribulation saints are promised that they will never again hunger or thirst, nor will the sun beat down on them. God Himself will shepherd them and lead them to springs of living water. What a beautiful picture of eternal comfort and peace!

Our Present Sealing

It's important to notice that verse 3 tells us these 144,000 saints were sealed by God. As believers today, we are also sealed! Ephesians 4:30 reminds us: "And don't grieve God's Holy Spirit. You were sealed by Him for the day of redemption."

Some believe Christians can lose their salvation, but God's Word is clear: the Holy Spirit seals every single person who has placed their trust in Christ alone for salvation! This is our assurance and security in Him.

Standing Firm in Christ

Chapter 7 of Revelation provides an answer to the question "Who is able to stand?" It is those who belong to God. Whether it's the 144,000 Jewish evangelists who will serve during the tribulation, the countless multitude of tribulation saints who will come to faith through their ministry, or we who are sealed by the Holy Spirit today, God's children are those able to stand.

Thank God for His provision and protection of His people! As the hymn declares:
"No power of hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
Till He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I'll stand!"

In a world that often feels chaotic and uncertain, Revelation 7 reminds us that God has a plan, He protects His people, and He will accomplish His purposes. Whether we face trials in this age or the coming tribulation period, our hope remains secure in the One who seals us with His Spirit and promises to wipe away every tear from our eyes.

All for Him,

Pastor Dustin
